The Science

How Laser Hair Removal Works

Laser hair removal uses targeted light energy to permanently disable hair follicles. The laser emits a specific wavelength of light that is absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in the hair shaft and follicle. This energy converts to heat, which damages the follicle and inhibits or eliminates its ability to produce new hair — all without affecting the surrounding skin.

The reason multiple sessions are required is rooted in biology: hair grows in cycles. At any given time, only a portion of your hairs are in the active growth phase (anagen) — and laser treatment is most effective during this phase. Each session targets the hairs that are actively growing at that time. Over the course of your full treatment series, progressively more follicles are permanently disabled.

The result is a dramatic, lasting reduction in hair growth — not just temporary removal like shaving or waxing. Most patients achieve 80–90%+ permanent reduction after completing their recommended sessions, with any remaining hair typically growing in finer and lighter.

The Laser Treatment Process — Step by Step

  1. 1 Consultation: Skin type, hair color, and treatment area are assessed. A patch test may be performed to confirm your skin's response.
  2. 2 Preparation: The area is shaved (not waxed) 24 hours before treatment. Skin must be clean and free of lotions or self-tanner.
  3. 3 Cooling & Protection: A cooling system protects the skin surface during treatment — most modern lasers include integrated cooling for comfort.
  4. 4 Laser Application: The handpiece is pressed against the skin and pulses of light are delivered to the treatment area. You may feel a sensation like a rubber band snap.
  5. 5 Post-Treatment: Mild redness or swelling may occur for a few hours. The treated hairs shed over 1–3 weeks — this is normal and expected.
  6. 6 Next Session: You return in 4–8 weeks (depending on the area) to target the next wave of hairs entering the growth cycle.

From basic bikini line to full Brazilian. One of the most life-changing treatments — no more ingrowns, no more shaving before the pool.

💪

Underarms

6–8 Sessions

Fast treatment (~10 minutes per session) with dramatic results. Most patients see significant reduction after just 3–4 sessions.

😊

Face (Upper Lip, Chin, Cheeks)

8–10 Sessions

Facial hair is often hormonally driven and may require more sessions or maintenance. Upper lip and chin are the most common requests.

🔙

Back & Shoulders

6–8 Sessions

Most commonly requested by men. Back treatments take 30–45 minutes and can be combined with shoulder or chest in a single session.

🤲

Arms & Forearms

6–8 Sessions

Full arm or forearm only — popular for those bothered by dark arm hair. Spaced 6 weeks apart for optimal results.

🧔

Neck & Neckline

6–8 Sessions

Cleans up beard lines and the back of the neck. Popular for men who want a consistently sharp neckline without constant grooming.

🫃

Abdomen & Chest

6–8 Sessions

Stomach line, chest, or full torso. Often combined with back for a comprehensive full-body hair reduction program.

🦶

Lower Legs / Toes

5–6 Sessions

Lower leg only or add-on toe treatment for a clean, complete result. Fewer sessions than full legs for many patients.

Treatment Planning

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

This is the question everyone asks — and the honest answer is: it depends. The number of sessions needed varies based on the treatment area, your hair color and thickness, your skin type, and your individual hair growth cycle. What we can tell you is what to generally expect, and that it's always a series — never a one-and-done.

Most areas require 6–8 sessions spaced 4–8 weeks apart. Facial hair — which is often driven by hormones — may require more sessions and occasional maintenance treatments. Body hair responds faster than facial hair in most cases.

Each session progressively reduces the number of active follicles. By the end of your series, most patients see an 80–95% permanent reduction. Any remaining hairs are typically finer, lighter, and slower-growing.

Hair Color

Darker hair absorbs laser energy best. Light blonde, red, or white hair responds less predictably — discuss with your provider.

Hair Thickness

Coarser, thicker hair typically responds faster. Fine hair may require more sessions.

Hormones

Hormonal conditions (PCOS, elevated androgens) can stimulate regrowth — may benefit from BHRT alongside laser therapy.

Treatment Area

Underarms and bikini respond fastest. Face and hormonal areas typically need more sessions and occasional touch-ups.

1–2

Early Sessions

Targets the most active follicles. Many patients notice shedding of treated hairs 1–3 weeks after. Reduction begins to be visible.

3–4

Significant Reduction

Most patients see 40–60% reduction by mid-series. Growth is visibly slower, patches of smooth skin become apparent.

5–6

Major Progress

60–80%+ reduction achieved. Many patients feel comfortable skipping shaving between sessions by this point.

7–8

Near-Complete Results

80–95% permanent reduction for most patients. Any remaining hair is finer, lighter, and much slower to return.

+

Maintenance (If Needed)

Some patients — especially with facial or hormonally driven hair — schedule 1–2 annual touch-up sessions to stay hair-free long-term.

Skin Type Guide

Laser & Skin Tone

Modern laser technology has made treatment possible across a much wider range of skin tones than earlier systems. Here's how the Fitzpatrick scale — the standard for classifying skin types — relates to laser hair removal.

I
Type I
Very fair, always burns, never tans
✓ Excellent Candidate
II
Type II
Fair, burns easily, tans minimally
✓ Excellent Candidate
III
Type III
Medium, sometimes burns, tans gradually
✓ Excellent Candidate
IV
Type IV
Olive/medium brown, rarely burns, tans well
⚙ Consult Required
V
Type V
Dark brown, very rarely burns
⚙ Consult Required
VI
Type VI
Deeply pigmented, never burns
⚙ Consult Required
ℹ️

Important note for darker skin tones: Laser hair removal can be safely performed on all skin tones with the right technology and an experienced provider. Darker skin types (IV–VI) require longer wavelength lasers (such as Nd:YAG) and careful settings to safely treat the hair without affecting surrounding skin. A consultation and patch test are especially important. Please don't assume you aren't a candidate — ask us.

What You Need to Know

Prep & Aftercare

What you do before and after each session directly impacts your results and comfort. Follow these guidelines for every treatment.

📋

Before Your Session

  • Shave the treatment area 24 hours before your appointment — do not wax or pluck
  • Come with clean, product-free skin — no lotions, deodorant, or makeup on the area
  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning (including self-tanner) for 2–4 weeks before treatment
  • Stay well hydrated — healthy skin responds better to laser treatment
  • Wear comfortable, loose clothing that allows easy access to the treatment area
  • Do NOT wax, thread, or use depilatory creams — the hair root must be intact
  • Do NOT use retinoids or harsh exfoliants on the area for 1 week prior
  • Do NOT come in with a tan — active sun exposure significantly increases risk of complications
  • Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements if possible (consult your provider)

After Your Session

  • Apply cool compresses to soothe redness or warmth — this is normal and usually resolves in hours
  • Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to keep skin calm and hydrated
  • Apply SPF 30+ every day — treated skin is more sensitive to UV exposure
  • Expect treated hairs to shed over 1–3 weeks — this is the laser working, not regrowth
  • Shave (gently) between sessions if needed — shaving is fine, waxing is not
  • Do NOT pick or scratch the area — allow shedding to happen naturally
  • Avoid hot showers, saunas, and intense exercise for 24–48 hours after treatment
  • No sun tanning or tanning beds for 2–4 weeks post-treatment
  • Avoid exfoliants, retinoids, and active skincare products for 3–5 days

Your Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Most patients describe it as a quick snapping or stinging sensation — similar to a rubber band flick against the skin. Modern lasers with integrated cooling systems significantly reduce discomfort. Sensitive areas (bikini, upper lip) may feel more intense, but sessions are short. Most people find it very manageable.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Laser hair removal is considered a permanent hair reduction method — not always 100% permanent for every single follicle. Most patients achieve 80–95% permanent reduction after a full series of treatments. Any remaining hair is typically finer and lighter. Hormonal factors (PCOS, menopause, elevated androgens) can occasionally stimulate new follicle activity over time.

Does laser work on all hair colors?

Laser works best on dark hair because it targets the melanin (pigment) in the hair. Dark brown and black hair responds best. Light blonde, red, gray, and white hair contain less pigment and respond less predictably — results can still occur but are less consistent. A consultation will help set realistic expectations for your specific hair color.

Can I get laser hair removal if I have dark skin?

Yes — with the right laser and an experienced provider. Darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick IV–VI) require longer-wavelength lasers and careful settings to avoid affecting melanin in the skin rather than just the hair. A consultation and patch test are essential. Please don't assume you're not a candidate — come talk to us.

Why do I need so many sessions?

Because hair grows in cycles. Only hairs in the active growth phase (anagen) respond to laser treatment, and at any given time only about 20–30% of your hairs are in that phase. Each session targets the next wave of active hairs. Over 6–8 sessions, progressively more follicles are permanently disabled.

Can I shave between sessions?

Yes — shaving is encouraged between sessions. You should NOT wax, thread, or use depilatory creams between treatments, as these methods remove the hair root, which the laser needs to target. Shaving leaves the root intact and is the only safe method to use during your treatment series.

How soon will I see results?

After each session, treated hairs will shed over the following 1–3 weeks — this is the process working correctly. Visible reduction in hair density becomes noticeable after sessions 2–3. Significant results (50–60% reduction) are typically visible by the midpoint of your series, with full results after the complete course of treatment.

Can hormones affect my laser hair removal results?

Yes — this is one of the most important and underappreciated factors. Hormonal imbalances (particularly elevated androgens, PCOS, or changes during menopause) can continue to stimulate new hair follicle activity, which can cause regrowth after treatment. Patients at All Kind Wellness have a unique advantage: if hormones are a factor, we can address them with BHRT alongside your laser treatments for better, longer-lasting outcomes.

Is there any downtime after a session?

No significant downtime. You may have some redness, mild swelling, or a warm sensation in the treated area for a few hours — similar to a mild sunburn. Most patients return to normal activities immediately. We recommend avoiding intense exercise, heat exposure, and direct sun for 24–48 hours after treatment.
